What Is Plastic Free July?
Plastic Free July is a Worldwide movement that started initially in Australia. It’s about making small changes and being part of a global effort.
The first time we partook in this plastic-free event in 2017, I took it to the extreme, as I often so with things, and we were completely plastic-free for a month. It was completely astounding all the things you use that do come in plastic and all the things you have to go without (thankfully, you can get chocolate in paper and foil or we’d all be doomed!).
Plastic is amazing because it’s almost indestructible.
During Plastic Free July You Can Pledge To:
- Avoid single-use plastic packaging
- Target takeaway items (the Top 4: bags, bottles, straws and coffee cups)
- Go completely plastic-free
I haven’t yet decided how extreme we’re going to go this year. I think it would be much easier to eliminate plastic entirely for a month because I’ve discovered shampoo bars that I like (that was a mission, I can tell you!) and we now have a zero waste shop in our town (that I hope opens up again after this pandemic). My local butchers are more than used to me taking my own contains and my local supermarket were also very accommodating at their cheese counter.
Are you planning on doing anything to celebrate? I’d love to hear about it. You can read more about Plastic Free July here.
